Petoskey waitress receives anonymous $2,021 tip

PETOSKEY - Waitress Becky Beer of J.W. Filmore's Family Restaurant in Petoskey had an afternoon Tuesday she never would have expected.
"It was crazy with Facebook and people reaching out to me," Beer said. "Some people I haven't talked to in a long time congratulating me. It was just crazy (Tuesday) the amount of people messaging me and congratulating me."
Beer, who has worked at the Petoskey restaurant for the past 10 years, was the recipient of an anonymous $2,021 tip Tuesday from a customer who placed a $44.69 take-out order.
A note atop the receipt for Beer read "JBN Tip Challenge, Just Be Nice, 2021 Happy New Year."
Beer said the tip came from an anonymous couple in Alpena, who also made a similar gesture to a server in Florida on Tuesday.
"It's just amazing, there's so many people in this area, in particular this region that it could have happened to," Beer said. "I feel almost guilty... I was asking myself why me, why did this happen? Because there's so many people that need it.
More: Black & Mobile, delivery app for Black-owned restaurants ramps back up in Detroit
"I'm just extremely thankful."
Beer, whose husband, Shawn, also works at J.W. Filmore's, said the generous offer "happened so fast she didn't know what was going on."
More: Restaurants are pulling out the stops with holiday meals to-go
She also plans to pay it forward after using a portion of the tip to pay bills and place money into a family foundation established after her uncle passed away.
Beer said while the recent closure of dine-in service for restaurants has been difficult, this summer J.W. Filmore's had record sales.
"This summer itself was just insane, it was the busiest summer we've ever had," Beer said. "It was very busy, yet different with all the changes and I kind of knew later this year another shutdown was coming. With the holiday season here and with all of employees it's terrible. Some of them got another job to offset things."
J.W. Filmore's owner Erika Closs said with all bars and restaurants being shut down because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it's been tough.
"It's unbelievable that someone would be that thoughtful and generous to do that," Closs said. "Especially with the holidays and this time of year and with what everyone has been going through."
Updates on how the coronavirus is affecting your community and the nation
Beer said she plans to do just what the note atop the receipt said.

Mediacorp drops DJ Sonia Chew from NYE show for attending birthday party

Major Singapore broadcaster Mediacorp has dropped radio DJ Sonia Chew from hosting its annual new year countdown show because she breached COVID-19 safety measures.
Chew, a 28-year-old host from 987FM radio, has been replaced by Class 95 DJ Jean Danker, 42, over her participation in a large October party.
"We take this matter seriously, and constantly brief and remind our artistes to adhere to safe management guidelines at all times. We will also cooperate fully with the authorities on their investigations," the company said in today's statement.
This year's annual countdown show and virtual concert will also still be hosted by Chew's original cohost, Joakim Gomez of 987FM
"In the meantime, Jean Danker will be hosting Let's Celebrate 2021 with Joakim Gomez," it added. Mediacorp owns both stations.
The show goes live on TV and online at 10:30 pm on Thursday. Other local stars performing on the show include singer Gareth Fernandez. The company also noted that the filming of the show would adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines on TV broadcasting that had been set out by authorities, which allowed no more than 20 onscreen talents to be unmasked during production.
Chew in October joined a handful of celebrities at a birthday party for actor Shane Pow. At least 13 people, including actors Terence Cao and Jeffrey Xu, were photographed without wearing face masks and social distancing. The Ministry of National Development said last week it was investigating.
Chew took to her Instagram account yesterday to apologize for her actions, saying that she was originally unaware that there was going to be a small party.
"Firstly, I want to sincerely apologise for my actions. Upon seeing that there were more than five people present, I should have removed myself from that situation, and I didn't. I'm fully responsible for that. This is by no means a way to make excuses for what happened," she wrote.
"I was invited to have drinks with what I understood to be a small group of people and was not aware it was a birthday celebration," she added.
Singaporeans are allowed to gather in groups of eight instead of five starting today as the country further relaxed COVID-19 measures. It has reported 58,524 cases and 29 deaths since the outbreak began in January.

A man not given to hyperbole, Hiroshi Tamura has big goals for the next Nissan Z. And since his title of Chief Product Specialist for the automaker's iconic coupe means it's his job to lead the car's development and maintain its quintessential "Z-ness," we'd do well to listen to what he's saying. In a new interview published by Nissan last week, Tamura was clear about his vision and mission: "I want people to drive the next Z and feel like they have discovered a new dance partner."
Nissan's sports-car spirit has been on life support for a while. The current Nissan Z, even the NISMO version, seems old enough to qualify for AARP membership. And it was a long period between the much-loved Nissan 300ZX, introduced in 1990, and the first iteration of this current model, the 350Z. And that car has never really said "Z" to any of us who own an original 1970 model 240Z.
This one does, AD: Autel OBD2 Diagnostic Tool. and it should, said Tamura, in the interview Nissan released. As the owner of two vintage Zs, they have the right man for the job. He has worked at Nissan since 1984, and to think he now is in control of helping shape the new car, previewed by the Nissan Z Proto concept (which looks ready for the showroom, frankly), "is a dream come true." In April 2012, he became the chief product strategist of the GT-R and the 370Z.
"I've been a Nissan petrol-head since I was a kid. I was a fan of two main cars in my youth-the GT-R and the Z-and it was then (that) I wanted to be a part of the future of Nissan and its sports cars. I remember the GT-R's power and racing performance, and I remember the beautiful look of the Fairlady Z [the precursor to the 240Z]; these cars changed my life.
The original Z and the Proto Z
"My intent for the Z has always been to provide a balance between style, power and technology, all of which can be easily accessed by the customer. The Z must move right, look right," he said.
The interview has plenty of reflection on the Z's importance to Nissan, but it doesn't add much to the concrete details. We've determined that the Z Proto has a twin-turbo V-6 and a six-speed manual (yes, manual!) or automatic transmission. It's 172.5 inches long (more than five inches longer than the current Z), 72.8 inches wide and has 19-inch tires and wheels.
Z Proto interior
For more than that, we have to wait. It will be worth it, Tamura said. "It helps that I have loved Z cars since the very beginning, and I have owned them over the years. I know what the Z means to me, so I know what it means to the customer."

Building The Worlds First V8 Swapped Tesla - YouTube

Rich Benoit is the face of refurbished Teslas. The YouTuber, who goes by Rich Rebuilds, created a name for himself by reclaiming salvaged Teslas and making them drive as if they were brand new. But recently, Rich has been getting into projects that involve more than fixing up flooded cars and tracking down hard-to-find parts. He's building much more unique and custom creations, See: Autel MaxiDiag MD806. like a V8-swapped Model S.
Now, it certainly won't be easy to swap an internal combustion engine into a car that came with an EV drivetrain from the factory. Rich has already begun the project by sourcing a Camaro LS3 complete with a six-speed manual transmission, but the real work still lies ahead.
Rich is really a normal car guy-he loves them regardless of if they're powered by batteries, gasoline or diesel. To put this into perspective, he showcases his built C6 Corvette Z06, Audi RS7, and even a Duramax GMC Sierra pickup in some of his videos. It just so happens that he enjoys tinkering with EVs and recognizes that automakers are pushing for electricity to be the future of cars. In the past, Rich has built an electric Mini Cooper, battery-powered rat rod, and even his own EV version of the Dominos DXP pizza delivery car.
The problem with Teslas is that they've become mundane for Rich, at least from an enthusiast's perspective. And his relationship with Tesla has been fairly stressed in recent years-that goes for the company (which won't sell him, or you, parts to keep old cars on the road) and the community of owners, which he notes is primarily made up of people who simply aren't car enthusiasts, or have downplayed his efforts to improve his EVs.
So sometimes you just need to take on an unorthodox project. And that's exactly what Rich is doing here.
You may have already guessed this, but there's a ton of custom work that'll need to be done if Rich really wants an LS-powered Tesla. Most of it will involve tricky fabrication, which he's done before, but maybe nothing on this level.
For starters, he plans to use not one, but three donor cars to complete the project-and remember that Tesla's skateboard design means a flat floorboard, so a transmission tunnel will need to be built to house the six-speed manual and driveshaft to power the rear wheels. It doesn't stop there as Rich says he'll also need custom axles for the car since this is a swap that nobody has ever (successfully) completed.
Keep in mind that a base Tesla Model S 75 makes around 382 horsepower, so the 426-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 from the Camaro should be an upgrade in itself. Sure, it won't have instant torque like the Model S's original powertrain, but it will be near-infinitely customizable with aftermarket support, unlike the current tuning scene for Tesla's electric drivetrains, which the automaker doesn't want you messing with anyway. Plus, who would expect V8 rumble from a Tesla?
The project itself is obviously in its infancy, but if there's one thing that Rich has shown us in the past, it's that he has the determination to take on tasks that others see as unfathomable.

Why Detroit Lions returner Jamal Agnew joked about firing himself

Jamal Agnew wasn't going to let it happen for the third straight game.
TheDetroit Lions' return man wasn't going to get stopped by a kicker.
Because if he did, he wouldn't have been able to forgive himself.
"Oh, two weeks in a row I got tackled by the kicker," Agnew said with a smile Saturday, "so I couldn't let it happen a third time in a row. I would have fired myself, to be honest."
With 9:38 left in the third quarter of the Lions' 47-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
on Saturday, Bradley Pinion punted 49 yards to the Detroit 26 near the sideline, where Agnew fielded the punt. Agnew cut to his right and broke an arm tackle. When Pinion was the last defender in his way, Agnew had a full head of steam and juked to his left, mk908p
. then blazed past for a 74-yard touchdown.
REMEMBERING BRADY'S DEBUT: Why wasn't he wearing Honolulu Blue & Silver?
COLUMN: This was Lions' most-2020 game; thank goodness it's over
LIONS SINK TO NEW LOW: 'We got our pride crushed today'
"I mean, it's just been frustrating all year not getting the opportunities," Agnew said. "For some reason the last month or so, we've been getting more and more opportunities. I keep telling my teammates, ‘You know, let's block, let's block it up.' They work their butts off because you never know when we're going to get the opportunity and it came.
"I mean, unfortunately, we were down 40 to nothing (before the touchdown). But we're still trying to make an impact, make plays on special teams. I'm just happy I got to make that play for the team and give us a little bit of juice."
Two weeks ago against the Green Bay Packers, Agnew had a 71-yard kickoff return that was kept out the end zone by kicker Mason Crosby's tackle. Then-special teams coordinator Brayden Coombs had fun threatening to levy a team fine on Agnew for getting stopped by the kicker.
Then last week at Tennessee, Agnew ran into kicker Stephen Gostkowski in the middle of the field on a 43-yard return that might have gone for a touchdown.
When Agnew finally took a return to the house Saturday it proved too little, too late. But it at least proved the Lions had not quit.

Detroit Lions headlines from Freep.com, delivered every day at 5:30 a.m.
"Oh, no doubt, the effort is definitely there," he said. "I just don't think the execution was there, to be honest. We didn't make the plays in the certain situations that we needed to. Obviously, that first drive, we had that big offsides kill a little bit of momentum. It's just those type of plays that we have to lock in and execute. We can't blame it on scheme or anything."

Michigan football's Jim Harbaugh 'takes a trip' with Christmas ghosts

Michigan footballcoach Jim Harbaugh was startled awake, lying next to a Christmas tree.
Harbaugh sprang to his feet. Fog rolled across the room and a silhouette appeared. The man wore a baseball cap with a block M, dark sunglasses and a blue windbreaker. A whistle dangled from his neck and he took off a headset.
"Bo?" Harbaugh asked. "Bo is that you?"
"I'm the ghost of football past," the silhouette said. "I am here to show you something."
BYE, DR. BLITZ: 5 candidates to replace Don Brown as defensive coordinator
The silhouette leaned forward and held out his hand. Harbaugh reached for it and a light flashed, blinding his eyes.
Suddenly, Harbaugh was watching himself coach at a satellite camp at Prattville High School in Alabama. It was June 5, 2015, You may need: code reader. and the Michigan fight song was playing. Harbaugh was wearing khakis, running around with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind, getting sweaty and he ripped off his shirt. Photographers went crazy, snapping pictures. Harbaugh was the talk of the sports world, raising Michigan's profile, ticking off the SEC and making U-M relevant again - a moment when everything seemed possible for the Wolverines.
"Where did this Jim Harbaugh go?" the silhouette asked.
A light flashed.
Suddenly, Harbaugh was watching himself celebrate after Michigan beat Florida in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, 2016 - Harbaugh's one and only bowl win. Confetti flew through the air.
"When your team is winning, be ready to be tough, because winning can make you soft," the silhouette said. "On the other hand, when your team is losing, stick by them. Keep believing."
A light flashed.
Suddenly, Harbaugh saw himself on a sleepover at Quinn Nordin's house in Rockford. It was Jan. 15, 2016, and the walls in Nordin's bedroom were covered with Penn State posters. Nordin, the nation's top kicker recruit, was a Penn State commit but Harbaugh got him to flip because Harbaugh was so brash and bold and different.
"Where did that Jim Harbaugh go?" the voice asked.
SEASON GRADES: Here's how we graded Michigan, Jim Harbaugh for lackluster 2020
A light flashed.
Suddenly, Harbaugh was watching himself coach in a game at Ohio State. J.T. Barrett, the Ohio State quarterback, had the ball on a fourth-down run. It was Nov. 26, 2016, and Harbaugh pumped his fist as Delano Hill tackled Barrett.
"He was short!" Harbaugh screamed. "He was down!"
The silhouette stayed quiet.
Updates on how the coronavirus is affecting your community and the nation
"Think about how everything would be different, if you change that one play!" Harbaugh said. "If the refs woulda gotten it right."
"That's not what I wanted to show you," the silhouette said. "Look at that broken headset. Where did that Jim Harbaugh go?"
A light flashed and suddenly, Harbaugh was watching himself in Rome.
It was April 2017, and Harbaugh was walking down cobblestone streets with his team. Harbaugh wouldn't stop. He was playing paintball with his players and then talking to reporters from ESPN - he was so newsworthy that he required his own crew - and then he met Pope Francis in St. Peter's Square.
A tear ran down Harbaugh's cheek.
"That moment with the Pope was life changing," Harbaugh said.
"Where did that Jim Harbaugh go?" the voice asked.
Harbaugh blinked his eyes.
Suddenly, he was in the Horseshoe in Columbus, Ohio.
"You owe it to every man, woman, and child in the state of Michigan to beat the Buckeyes and silence their fans!" the silhouette said. "Now go out there and make it happen."
"Look around," Harbaugh said. "The place is empty. There is no game."
"(Bleep)!" the silhouette said.
"COVID," Harbaugh said. "First time it has been canceled since 1917."
A light flashed. Suddenly, Harbaugh was in the football offices in Ann Arbor.
"Where is everybody?" the voice asked.
"No bowl game," Harbaugh said.
"What the hell?" the voice said. "Where did your mojo go? You stop drinking milk?"
Defensive coordinator Don Brown's office was empty, and a radio was playing. An announcer was talking about Harbaugh's future. "Is Harbaugh gonna get an extension or ...

China says it's open to sharing moon rocks as Chang'e 5 samples head to the lab

China has recovered the lunar samples collected by the daring Chang'e 5 mission and now work is underway to get the materials to the laboratory for science - and for sharing.
The Chang'e 5 reentry capsule landed in Inner Mongolia on Dec. 16, marking the end of the 23-day mission. The capsule, still containing the collected samples, was then airlifted to Beijing.
The precious lunar materials were handed over for processing, analysis and storage at a specially designed facility belonging to the Chinese Academy of Sciences on Saturday, Dec. 19. The samples collected were found to weigh 3.81 lbs (1.731 kilograms) in total.
Related: China plants its flag on the moon with Chang'e 5 lunar lander
China's Chang'e 5 moon lander collected the material via a drill and a robotic arm, in the hard vacuum of the lunar surface.
The plan was to drill a 6.6 ft (2 meters) deep hole to collect 1.1 lb (500 grams) of material, with the scoop grabbing 3.3 lbs (1.5 kg). "However while the lander started drilling there, the radar echograms showed that there were several layers of slates underneath the landing site. So we were unable to go further down when we reached about one meter deep, You may need: Launch code reader. and we could face greater risk and overrun the time if we did not stop immediately," Hu Hao, chief designer of the third phase of China's lunar exploration program, told CCTV.
This is expected to be the reason for the samples collected being less than the planned 4.4 lbs (2 kilograms).
Next, scientists have devised a special process to prevent the samples from being contaminated by particles on Earth.
"We will unpack the samples in a vacuum environment, and transfer them to a nitrogen environment for storage and processing," Zhang Guangliang, chief designer of the ground application system of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Project, told Chinese media.
As the samples can easily be contaminated, CAS has designed a clean room which will minimize the pollution from Earth particles, said Zhang. He added that the utmost care would be taken to get the most of the invaluable material.
"We will use the equipment with highest accuracy and take the smallest portion of the lunar samples in research to realize the maximum research efficacy of the sample," he added.
Li Chunlai, deputy chief designer of the Chang'e-5 mission, said in a press conference on Dec. 17, a day after the landing, that the rocks were collected from a site in Oceanus Procellarum thought to be of great scientific value in areas including space weathering, volcanism, the regional geological background and evolution of the moon.
"We will conduct long-term and systematic research on lunar samples in the laboratory, including its structure, physical properties, chemical composition, isotopic composition, characteristics of the minerals and the geological evolution behind the samples. We hope to deepen our understanding of the origin and evolution of the moon," Li said.
Related: The latest news about China's space program
Wu Yanhua, deputy director of the China National Space Administration, said in the same press conference that there would be three main uses of the samples: science, public outreach and sharing samples with other countries and scientists around the world.
Part of the samples may also be used as diplomatic gifts according to precedents set by the United States and Russia, Wu added.
However, the elephant in the room was the matter of cooperation between China and the United States. Asked if the samples would be shared with NASA, Wu replied that the "Chinese government is ready to share the lunar samples including relevant data with all like-minded institutions from other countries," but the matter of cooperating with NASA depends on U.S. policy.
"It has been unfortunate however after a Congressional act adopted in 2011 U.S. space institutions have been blocked from cooperating with China, which is the Wolf Act. On the basis of equality, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation we are willing to conduct sincere and friendly cooperation with U.S. institutions," Wu stated.
Wu also said that, in accordance with the...

BMW's new big-nosed electric crossover, the iX, is a huge deal for the brand. The Bavarians call it their technology flagship, and as such, this SUV crucially developed in-house promises up to 500 horsepower and a range of 300 miles based on the EPA test cycle-a figure that grows to over 372 miles using the European WLTP test cycle. The real-world range lies somewhere between those two, You may also like: Topdon Car Battery Tester. yet either way, BMW wants to achieve a combined power consumption of less than 21 kWh per 100 kilometers or the equivalent to 62.13 miles. That's in line with what Tesla claims for its Model X P90 and P90D models.
Cold-weather testing is an important step in all vehicle development programs, yet with electric drive, temperature control is an even more pressing issue. BMW's fifth-generation eDrive tech features high-voltage batteries and a quick charging system that need to perform on the coldest of days, maintaining optimum operation by the clever management system's heat circulation to keep the batteries warm. When it comes to being plugged in, BMW claims the iX can go from 10 to 80 percent battery power in just 40 minutes, or gain 75 miles of range after just ten minutes on the charger.
BMW also says that it needed to drive to the North Cape of Europe to conclude this test, but as someone who drove a Miata with the top down in March to the same island of Norway, I would argue they did it mostly for the pictures and to have some fun.
Here's the science behind my wild theory: Looking for some guaranteed cold in Scandinavia, carmakers usually end up in either Finland or Sweden to do their winter testing. Up high north in Finnish Lapland, the town of Ivalo acts as the main hub for the industry, with private proving ground Testworld and tire manufacturer Nokian's own winter wonderland being the main attractions.
In Sweden, Luleå is a major city with a good airport and temperatures dropping well below -20ºF to freeze the northernmost arm of the almost saltless Baltic Sea. A touch further to the west, the town of Arjeplog is where Bosch built its winter test center. If you drive all the way up to Nordkapp, the northernmost point of Europe on the Norwegian island of Magerøya, you'll hit both the deserted roads of Finland and Sweden before crossing the Norwegian border, only to realize that thanks to the Gulf Stream, the Norwegian coast is much warmer than the middle of the land further to the south, with the ocean straying free of ice, and the roads cut free from snow on a regular basis. Mind you, BMW has this to add:
"In the process, test engineers evaluate above all the interaction between drive and suspension systems on road surfaces with a low friction coefficient. Unsecured tracks, icy roads and ice surfaces especially prepared for test-driving on the edge of the Arctic Circle offer the ideal conditions to precisely coordinate the motor control technology, the electric four-wheel drive and suspension control systems right up to the limits of longitudinal and lateral vehicle dynamics."
Indeed. Additionally, the final stretch of the route known as E69 is particularly tight and scenic, so I'm happy that BMW's development team could drive their 500-horsepower electric crossover to Honningsvåg, the cute town where most who visit North Cape reside.
Got a tip on upcoming electric BMWs, Scandinavian living, or else?

Simulated Video Reveals Lockheed Martin's Impressive Missile System

The U.S.'s top weapons supplier, Lockheed Martin, shared an impressive three-minute video on YouTube on Friday. What was it about? The video showcased the company's latest PrSM long-distance precision-strike missile system in a simulated attack.
The "attack" went flawlessly, and showcases Lockheed Martin's surface-to-surface weapon system and its range of capabilities. These include attacking, neutralizing, You may also like: TPMS Sensor. suppressing, and destroying targets from up to 310 miles (499 km) away.

The company's PrSM missile is kitted out with an intensive munition (IM) propulsion system, and IM energetic payload that can defeat the PrSM target set. It sports an open system style for affordability and flexibility, is HIMARS and M270 compatible, and is modular for future growth.
Lockheed Martin's PrSM missile went through a number of tests over the summer, when it was unveiled. As was explained at the time, "Operating with the PrSM missile should be a smooth transition for soldiers already used to working on the ATACMS system", said Brig. Gen. John Rafferty, the Army's Long Range Precision Fires cross-functional team director, and Gen. John Murray, who is in charge of the Army Futures Command.
Some techniques, tactics, and procedures will change, however, Army rocket crews will use a lot of the same software, computers, and platforms.
"Outside looking in, it looks exactly the same for our soldiers," said Murray to Defense News.
In the recently-released video, PrSM's capabilities are put on display in what looks like a war game in a computer game. However, this missile system will be used in much more "real" situations, and its recent simulation is just the starting point of what may prove to be an invaluable asset to the U.S. defense and military force.
Check out the video below, it'll impress you, no doubt:

Toyota GR Yaris Looks Great With 1990s Rally-Spec Celica Livery

Initially, hearing about a Toyota Yaris being used as a tribute to the great Celica GT-Four rally car sounds like heresy, as these two cars share nothing in common. The Yaris is a small city hatchback that's made to ferry people from point A to point B, while the other's dedicated to doing so as fast as possible – even better on rally races.
But we're not talking about a regular Yaris here; it's the Toyota GR Yaris – a three-door hatchback that was introduced as a homologation model for the Toyota GR Yaris WRC. And just like the Celica GT-Four that it aims to succeed, the Toyota GR Yaris is a fierce model that's worthy of current hype.
As a tribute to that, Shmee took his GR Yaris to the shop and have it customized to wear the famous Celica GT-Four's Castrol livery. To the fans of World Rally Championship and Sega Rally, this color combination should instantly ring a bell. Of note, the Celica GT-Four has won two manufacturer's and four driver's titles when it competed in the Group A of WRC from 1988 to 1997.
Using the same green and red swoops in the body, Dub Customs scanned and plotted the graphics into Shmee's GR Yaris. That posed a challenge, See: TPMS Tool. though, since the Celica was a liftback coupe while the GR Yaris is a hot hatchback.
Then again, the final product is a hoot, and you can watch the entire process in the video embedded on top of this page. This Toyota GR Yaris in Castrol livery looks awesome, and quite nostalgic too, and we think that it's a proper tribute to the great Toyota rally car.
How about you? Do you think the GR Yaris is a proper tribute to the Celica GT-Four? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

The Hoddle of Coffee: Tottenham Hotspur news and links for Friday, December 18

Hi, all!
Let's give a Hoddle debut to Son Heung-min's parents to celebrate him winning the Puskás Award.
Ramble of the Day
In normal times, I find the ballots of The Best FIFA Football Awards a little bit more interesting than the ceremony itself. In the spirit of 2020, I was more attracted to the idea of judging the backdrops of the many virtual invitees to the award show. Naturally, See: Autel car diagnostic. there were a lot of inoffensive, if completely boring white backdrops. There were also a few that were clearly at their clubs' training facilities, situated in front of giant logos of their clubs.
There were some that revealed a bit more about either the person or the people designing those particular facilities. FIFA president Gianni Infantino was the first to join remotely, and he did so with an artificial backdrop. I find all artificial backdrops slightly distracting and don't really like them, but it's on brand and the production value is high enough so he can have it.
Many people were checking in from less branded parts of their clubs' training grounds, which provided an interesting enough look at the interior design of these places. Son Heung-min was at Tottenham's training center when he won the Puskás Award, and this looks like a very cozy corner of the place. I'm really loving that blue wall (especially after seeing it in Spurs' video of Son winning the award).
Liverpool's Jürgen Klopp was at the club's new training ground, along with the players honored yesterday. It looks decent enough, but the framing is more about whoever is in front of the camera and less so his surroundings.
Manchester City's Lucy Bronze also seemed to be at her club's training facility. I have no idea if this spot actually overlooks a nice view or not, but it looks pretty nice at night in its simple modernity.
There was also one particular aesthetic that the Netherlands' Sarina Wiegman and Leeds' Marcelo Bielsa went for - coach in a closet. Wiegman had the nicer of the two, though my opinion is influenced greatly by the fact that we never got a close up of Bielsa's set up. This might not be a closet, but there's a lot of storage and it looks quite organized.
Then, there were a few who were at home, and two really nailed it. I feel like, with a bit more work on staging, Arsenal's Vivianne Miedema might've made the cut, but she cut her Christmas tree and a fascinating looking painting out of the frame. One of those champions is Ciro Ferrara, who came with a fully lit Christmas tree. The lights actually blink, which made it better.
The real champion, though, is Antonio Cabrini. Not everyone can manage sticking just a few of their accolades (there are many more) in their Zoom background, but if you've got it, you absolutely should elegantly flaunt it.
tl;dr: A recap of the backdrops of the remote invitees of The Best FIFA Football Awards.

Use Google Earth and Street View to explore the planet from your couch

For a long stretch of human history, you had to actually go somewhere to see what it looked like. Nowadays, it's much easier to check out the world's sights from the comfort of your own home.
Virtual tourism tools are improving all the time, thanks in part to Google's efforts to map all four corners of the globe. The search behemoth has Google Earth, which runs right in your web browser, but it can also help you explore more local areas with its Street View photography. Both are free, and when you know how to use them, You may also like: Topdon Car Battery Tester. you'll be able to fly around the world faster than any plane.
How to use Google Earth
Google Earth has been with us for more than a decade now. Although it first launched as a desktop program, Google eventually revamped and relaunched it as a web application. It gives you a three-dimensional, interactive twist on the foundations laid by Google Maps, which makes Google Earth perfect for touring any location you like.
Getting started is easy. Once you go to the website, you have two options: You can either click the Launch Earth button to tool around yourself, or scroll down further to take a pre-made guided tour of a specific location. The latter will send you to places around the globe, where you can explore the area, check out photos, and read explanatory notes.
If you choose to dive into the main interface, simply click the search button (a magnifying glass) and type where you want to go. The search field is pretty smart, so, for example, "capital of Mongolia" will take you to the same place as "Ulaanbaatar." If there are similarly named locations, the program will offer you a list of options to choose from.
The program's navigation is pretty easy to use. Try out these commands:
When you zoom into the highest level of detail, you can see just how comprehensive Google Earth's 3D modeling has become, especially in urban areas. As on Google Maps, click on any of the names to learn more about that place or landmark.
In addition to navigation, you have other menu options. Use the top-left hamburger button to open up the menu, where you'll see the Map Style setting. This lets you customize the amount of detail you see on the screen. Other options on the menu include the Voyager tours-the pre-made packages we mentioned earlier-and places you've bookmarked for later reference. Every time a place card appears on screen, whether from a search or a click on the map, you can bookmark it using the Add to project button at the foot of the card.
Another feature we want to flag is the I'm Feeling Lucky option: the die icon on the left-hand sidebar. Click it to be transported to a location on the globe chosen by Google. The destination will usually be an area of natural beauty or particular interest. This is a great way to discover new places.
As well as using the web interface, you can also download Google Earth for Android or iOS. The phone apps are similar to the web interface, though you must use your fingers to navigate rather than a mouse. You can still search for, tour around, and bookmark specific locations, or choose I'm Feeling Lucky to jump somewhere new.
How to use Street View
Google Earth is fantastic for getting an overview of a place or checking out topography on a wide scale, but Street View is better for taking a really close look at neighborhoods. Built right into Google Maps and Google Earth, Street View is what most people are familiar with. To find somewhere specific, search for it in Google Maps or Google Earth, then drag the little Pegman icon from the lower-right corner to that spot.
Blue areas on the map mark streets and places of interest where Street View imagery is available. So, once you've reached your destination, click and drag to look around. The arrows or blue lines on screen are there to help you navigate while in Street View, so you can take a tour without leaving the ground. You can also tap the cursor keys on your keyboard to move about.
If you don't want to go through Google Maps, Street View actually has its own portal online, where you can find some of the best photography of loca...

McBurrows is ranked No. 549 overall and the No. 43 cornerback, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He is the only cornerback in Michigan's 2021 class. That, coupled with the position group's struggles this season, makes McBurrows a vital member of the class.
McBurrows became the 20th recruit to sign with the Wolverines on Wednesday. McBurrows' teammate from St. Thomas Aquinas, four-star linebacker Jaydon Hood, announced he would sign early with Michigan after previously saying he would wait until February to sign

Singapore adds face verification, multi-user SMS to SingPass 2FA

Data protection privacy concept. GDPR. EU. Cyber security network. Business man protecting data personal information on tablet. Padlock icon and internet technology networking connection on digital dark blue background.
Singapore has added face verification as a two-factor authentication (2FA) option to log into SingPass, an account residents use to access e-government services. They also can choose to send their SMS one-time password (OTP) to another SingPass user's mobile number, which is offered to help less digitally savvy users navigate the platform with external assistance.
The two additional 2FA options were introduced as part of the government's efforts to support a digitally inclusive society, said Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) in a statement Wednesday. The government agency is responsible for the country's ICT and smart nation rollouts,
SingPass users will be able to log into their account first by entering their ID and password, then by scanning their face on an internet-connected computer equipped with a webcam or a mobile device with a front-facing camera. If they do not have access to any of these systems, they can visit selected public locations equipped with the service, including IRAS Taxpayer and Business Service Centre and CPFB's Bishan Service Centre, You may also like: autel maxitpms. with more locations to be added progressively.
GovTech said the face verification technology was integrated with security features to safeguard against fraud, such as liveness detection capabilities to detect and block the use of photographs, videos, or masks during the verification process.
The added option not only would be useful to support less digitally savvy users who would not need to key in additional information such as OTPs, but also could facilitate Singaporeans living abroad and might not have a locally-registered number to receive SMS OTPs, said National Digital Identity's senior director Kwok Quek Sin.
The need to better assist the less digitally savvy also led to the inclusion of "multi-user SMS OTP", where SingPass users can link their account to another user's mobile number such as their child to receive their OTPs.
The addition of the two 2FA options follows plans to discontinue the OneKey token by the end of March next year. Some 120,000 users of the physical 2FA device, introduced in 2013, currently were being transitioned to the other options, said GovTech.
There are four million SingPass users here who can tap their account to access 500 digital services provided by more than 180 government agencies as well as commercial entities, such as banks.
Singapore's Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in October said it had been rolling out iris and facial scanners since July at all automated and manual immigration points located at the passenger halls of Singapore's land, sea, and air checkpoints. These included Changi Airport Terminal 4, Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal, and the Tuas and Woodlands checkpoints that border Northern neighbour Malaysia.
The systems would use travellers' iris and facial data, replacing fingerprints, as the primary biometric identifiers for immigration clearance.
Singapore in September inked a deal with British vendor iProov to provide face verification technology for use in the country's national digital identity system. The security feature was launched as a pilot earlier this year, allowing SingPass users to access e-government services via biometric.
iProov's Genuine Presence Assurance technology is touted to have the ability to determine if an individual's face is an actual person, and not a photograph, mask or digital spoof, and authenticate that it is not a deepfake or injected video. Its agreement with the Singapore government also marked the first time the vendor's cloud facial verification technology was used to secure a country's national digital id...

Team Engineers Tomatoes to Synthesize Parkinson’s Drug | IE

What if a vital drug could come from our food? That would be a more effective, more affordable, and more convenient way to get this essential supplement from our daily diet.
RELATED: NEW GENE-EDITED TOMATOES CAN NOW BE GROWN IN GRAPE-LIKE BOUQUETS
Researchers led by a John Innes Centre team have now produced a tomato enriched in the Parkinson's disease drug L-DOPA that could not only be used in developing nations where access to drugs is restricted but could also be useful for those who suffer adverse side effects from the medication.
"The idea is that you can grow tomatoes with relatively little infrastructure. As GMOs (genetically modified organisms) you could grow them in screen houses, controlled environments with very narrow meshes, so you would not have pollen escape through insects," said in a statement Professor Cathie Martin, the corresponding author of the study.
"Then you could scale up at a relatively low cost. A local industry could prepare L-DOPA from tomatoes because it's soluble and you can do extractions. Then you could make a purified product relatively low tech which could be dispensed locally."
The fruit was modified by introducing a gene responsible for the synthesis of L-DOPA found in beetroot. L-DOPA is produced from tyrosine, so the researchers inserted a gene encoding a tyrosinase that elevated the level of L-DOPA specifically in the fruit parts of the plant.
The new tomatoes carried levels of 150mg of L-DOPA per kg. Now, the researchers even hope to extract the L-DOPA in the plants and modify it into a pharmaceutical product.
"We have demonstrated that the use of the tyrosinase-expressing tomatoes as a source of L-DOPA is possible. It's a further demonstration of tomato as a strong option for synthetic biology. Additionally, there were surprising beneficial effects including improvement in shelf-life and raised levels of amino-acids that we can investigate, AD: autel maxitpms. " said first author Dr. Dario Breitel.

Asia Pacific Financial Services Industry organizations’ maturity in adopting innovation has ensured resilience amid the pandemic: Microsoft Study

FSI organizations have improved their sentiments on innovation with 61% of FSI leaders agreeing that innovation is easier since COVID-19. Other FSI organizations have also embraced a more positive stance, with 52% agreeing with this statement.
"FSI has maintained its lead, based on our findings, and was assessed to be the most innovative vertical[iii], with the highest culture of innovation maturity score, and the highest proportion of leaders and verticals," said Michael Araneta, Autel Maxisys pro mk908p
. Head of IDC Financial Insights, Asia Pacific.
"What has been most interesting is that large FSI organizations – the incumbents – are not necessarily laggards in the space but on occasion, credible leaders with a mature culture of innovation. On the flipside, the prospects of some challenger banks are already dimming in some markets, as they have not been able to address sources of funding despite previously having good prospects when it came to their services in payments, and lending," continued Araneta.
Putting a Culture of Innovation into practice – best practices from FSI Leaders for the new year
The study revealed the best practices that organizations can adopt, referencing the culture of innovation framework, for progress across people, process, data, and technology.
Specifically, organizations are encouraged to:
1. Leverage platforms to drive transformation
As FSI organizations continue to forge ahead and integrate technology in their operations as well as products and services, moving mission-critical business processes and workloads onto cloud platforms will be key to ensure that innovation scales. Technology architecture will also need to be well-integrated to effectively enable transformation, which will be a key measure of technology Return on Investment (ROI).
2. Enhance People's capabilities through enterprise-wide skilling initiatives
A diverse cross-industry, multicultural and multi-generational talent will be key in generating new and disruptive ideas. Beyond that, FSIs need to champion a culture that embraces collaboration, especially with third parties, to create new value.
3. Utilize Data for extreme personalization and rapid value creation
Investing in data will not only enable FSIs to enhance and differentiate products and services, but with trust, privacy, and security paramount for their businesses, a well-integrated data architecture will enable the building of accurate, trusted and secure data sources for reliable decision-making when it is needed most. This will enable personalization and real-time insights.
4. Integrate automation within Processes to empower continuous innovation
Automation will be key especially for business processes that have high implications to customer experience, to accelerate the enablement of enterprise-wide collaboration and knowledge sharing. Processes will also need to account for a way to ensure a formal and systematic approach to driving innovation and incorporating this within operations for sustained impact.
"As FSIs continue to forge ahead in a post-pandemic world, lasting transformation will only take place if FSIs alongside investments in technology, prioritize people and culture, as they are key to ensuring greater collaboration and continuous transformation. At Microsoft, we are committed to working with the regional FSI ecosystem to unlock the value of innovation, and reimagine the industry for the future, together," concluded Leung.
