Uber Sells Its Disastrous Self-Driving Division | The Drive

Uber will sell its self-driving division Advanced Technologies Group to Aurora Innovations, reports The Verge. The two companies announced the sale Monday. Aurora Innovations is a San Francisco autonomous driving startup founded in 2016 by the former lead engineer of Google's self-driving unit, Chris Urmson.
Uber will invest $400 million in Aurora, gain a 26% stake in Aurora, and Uber CEO Dana Khosrowshahi will join Aurora's board as part of the deal, Autel mk908p
. CNBC reports. Aurora's valuation, which was formerly a competitor to Uber's Advanced Technologies Group, shot up to $10 billion even though they'll face the same challenges Uber has had with developing the technology. That's up from $7.25 billion in April 2019, when Toyota, Denso and Softbank took stakes in Aurora. Aurora also has backing from Hyundai, Amazon, and several major venture capital firms.
As the pandemic continues to affect Uber's primary ride-hailing business, Uber has looked for numerous ways to get to profitability, including layoffs and sales of its less profitable divisions. Uber has yet to have a profitable quarter-ever-even as it's been the subject of much hype. So far, the company has sold its pie-in-the-sky autonomous air taxi unit as well as part of its freight division.
The self-driving Advanced Technologies Group was supposed to be its ticket to profitability-as in, a way to avoid paying drivers. As we all know, there are no self-driving cars on the road today, and the technology is far away from being able to run without a minder behind the wheel making sure it doesn't mess up.
Thus, Uber determined that it's better for someone else to play the expensive long game. The company has had autonomous vehicle development has had numerous issues with safety along the way, including the March 2018 death of Elaine Herzberg, who was struck by an Uber test vehicle. The test vehicle's minder later faced criminal charges for streaming The Voice on her phone when Herzberg was hit, per The Verge. Uber dramatically scaled back its autonomous car testing after that incident, although it recently released plans to test its third-generation vehicle in San Francisco and Washington, D.C.
Uber's self-driving woes weren't only about safety issues, either. Waymo, the self-driving company spun off from Google, sued Uber in 2017 over Uber allegedly stealing Waymo's trade secrets. This led to a settlement between the two companies and an 18-month jail sentence for Uber engineer and former Google employee Anthony Levandowski, The Verge notes. Levandowski was fired from Uber for not cooperating with the investigation.
"Few technologies hold as much promise to improve people's lives with safe, accessible, and environmentally friendly transportation as self-driving vehicles," Khosrowshahi said in a statement about the sale quoted by CNBC. Here's hoping that Aurora takes that safety element a lot more seriously.

Kandi, America’s Cheapest EV Startup, Accused of Faking Sales to Get $160M in US Investment

Chinese electric vehicle startup Kandi Technologies Group may be best known for building that wacky little car seen in Tiger King, or its announcement of the cheapest EV in America, the K27. However, according to new allegations by financial research firm Hindenburg Research, Kandi attracted a whopping $160 million in U.S. investment in the past month and a market capitalization of over $1 billion not just by riding the "next Tesla"-style EV hype train, but by falsifying more than half its sales.
"All told, we think Kandi has engaged in a major fake revenue scheme, hyping its story to U.S. investors, in order to take advantage of regulatory gaps enabling China-based companies to siphon cash from U.S. capital markets with impunity," Hindenburg wrote.
If the name Hindenburg Research sounds familiar, AD: Launch scan tool. it should. It's the short-seller financial research firm that released a damning report on hydrogen and EV truck startup Nikola Motors this fall that also alleged widespread fraud. That report was followed by a plummeting valuation, the eventual departure of Nikola's CEO, and yesterday, news of a drastically downsized deal with General Motors.
It's worth treating their allegations with some skepticism given that they admit to taking a short position on Kandi stock, as they did with Nikola. But that last report nearly led to Nikola's undoing, so this new research may similarly throw Kandi's future into doubt-even if only in the eyes of investors. Reuters reports shares of Kandi fell more than 19 percent on Monday following Hindenburg's report.
Hindenburg Research alleges almost 64 percent of Kandi's sales over the past 12 months have been to undisclosed parties with some relation to Kandi themselves. Per the report, roughly 55 percent of Kandi's last-12-month sales went to Jinhua Chaoneng Automobile Sales, which shares an executive with Kandi and a phone number with a Kandi subsidiary.
The remaining roughly 9 percent of Kandi's undisclosed-party sales over the past 12 months went to Zhejiang Kuke Sports Technology Co., which used to be wholly owned by Kandi and still has the Kandi logo on its website.
The Drive reached out to Kandi for comment on these allegations Monday evening and will update this story if we hear back.
"Hindenburg Research, as it disclosed, has taken a short position in shares of Kandi," Kandi said in a press release that went out earlier this morning. "Kandi believes that the report contains numerous errors, misstatements of historical facts, inaccurate conclusions, and superfluous opinions."
The company added: "Kandi takes seriously any accusations of impropriety and intends to address the key issues raised by the report. The Company plans to study the report in-depth, isolate the key inaccuracies, and prepare detailed explanations that will be presented in the near future."
Hindenburg alleges that just under 91 percent of the company's U.S. exports went to three undisclosed parties that were based out of Kandi's U.S. facilities. In other words, Zhejiang Kuke Sports Technology Co. was buying cars from Kandi and then selling the cars back to companies related to Kandi.
Fifty percent of Zhejiang Kuke Sports Technology Co.'s exports went to Massimo Motor Sports, which was based out of Kandi America's headquarters and owned by Kandi America's founder. To bring it all full circle, Hindenburg claims that Massimo sold products right back to Kandi.
Hindenburg alleges that Kandi's Chinese rideshare app partner is "mostly vaporware," not even ranking among the top 50 rideshare apps in China. Kandi has claimed thpany is good for up to 300,000 Kandi EV sales in the future.
Hindenburg Research also points to several red flags concerning Kandi's finances, including claims that it put revenue on the books has no way of ever collecting. Hindenburg cited the company's Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) of 278 days last quarter. DSO is a common statistic used to gauge how well a company is doing at actually collecting its revenue, and Kandi's is 5.6 times worse than the closest similar company in the automotive space.
These dealings, Hindenbu...

Honda halts production at Swindon due to parts delays

Honda has paused production at itsSwindon factory dueto transport delays causing a shortage of parts, the BBC is reporting.
The Japanese firm has told employees that congestion at UK ports is causing a "transport-related parts delay". Like most manufacturers, Honda operates a just-in-time production method, whereby parts are delivered exactly when they are required.
"The situation is currently being monitored with a view to restart production as soon as possible," Honda said in a statement. Reports claim one last-resort alternative could be to air freight parts from the source countries.
UK container ports, You may also like: TPMS Tool. including Felixstowe, Southampton and London Gateway, are said to be heavily congested. An increasing number of consumer orders for Christmas and companies filling lockdown-induced backlogs are listed as two reasons for the delays, while it's also suggested companies are stockpiling goods before the Brexit transition period ends on 1 January.

Hondaannounced it would beclosing its Swindon manufacturing plant , where theCivicis currently produced, in 2021. First Bentley EV Could Be A High-Riding Sedan

Bentley is one of the manufacturers that's not rushing into rapid development of electrified or fully electric vehicles yet. Yes, the Crewe-based automaker has the Bentayga plug-in hybrid on sale on selected markets but its first zero-emission model is about five years away from now. According to a new report, it may turn out to be a little surprise.
Autocar claims the brand's first production electric vehicle could be a high-riding sedan based on a bespoke architecture currently being developed by Volkswagen Group engineers. More precisely, the same folks that are working on Audi's Project Artemis platform for high-end battery-powered vehicles.
This new Bentley will be very different from everything we've ever seen from the brand. The switch to electric power will unlock new potential for the design team and on the other hand, You may need: Bluetooth scan tool. the limitations that EVs have mean it may not be a part of Bentley's existing model lines. All in all, it'll be a whole new adventure for the marque.
"We want to appeal to more women and be more relevant in future urban environments which are very much different to today, and we want to appeal to modern luxury values which are different to ones from 20 years ago. We've already moved with the times but the times will change again in the next 10 to 15 years," Bentley boss Adrian Hallmark told Autocar during a recent interview.
Bentley's electrification program differs from what other manufacturers are doing. The Crewe manufacturer wants to electrify its entire lineup by 2025 and has only batter-electric cars on sale from 2030. Most of the other automakers have significantly more aggressive EV plans but Bentley doesn't see enough battery tech progress coming for a luxury automaker in the next four to five years.
"By 2025, we're predicting 110-kWh to 120-kWh batteries will be available, which starts to put bigger cars in a position where you can get 400-500 km [250-310 miles] range," Hallmark added. "You need 150-kWh-plus to get a fullsize SUV to have the equivalent performance of a combustion-engined vehicle, which is why hybrids are so important in playing a part for bigger vehicles in the next five to 10 years."

Michigan restaurants penalized for violating DHHS order

Michigan agencies issued citations to four restaurants and suspended liquor licenses of three restaurants Wednesday for violating the state-mandated temporary ban on indoor service, according to a news release.

DHHS also issued $1,000 citations to Cafe Rosetta in Calumet and Woodchips Barbecue in Lapeer.

2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Sees Small Base-Price Increase, Can Top $43K

The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe has been revealed back in October and it's coming with a substantial revamp considering that it's just a facelift. Those changes come at a price, naturally, and we now have the exact figures as discovered by CarsDirect through an early order guide.
According to the website that specializes in price analysis in the United States, the Santa Fe at its base SE trim will start at $28,025 – a $575 increase from the 2020 SE model's current sticker price of $27,450.
The Calligraphy trim, You may need: Autel diagnostic scanner. which will be a new addition for the 2021 model year, will reportedly be offered for $43,475. Compared to the current top-spec Limited trim with an all-wheel drivetrain ($40,750), that's a massive $2,725 increase. Of note, all the prices mentioned here come with destination charges.
The price hike for the 2021 model year comes with a hefty amount of changes, though. Apart from the obvious aesthetic updates, and that good-looking Hyundai Palisade-like DRLs, the 2021 Santa Fe is riding on a new platform. The new underpinnings promise better performance, handling, and safety. It also paved the way for the possibility of adding electrified powertrains.
The new Calligraphy trim, which was added to the Palisade this year, offers premium features and upscale materials into the large crossover. These additions include a higher-grade Nappa quilted leather, a revised front grille, premium door/seat accent trim, an eco-suede headliner, a full-color head-up display, expanded ambient lighting, and exclusive 20-inch wheels. It will also get the turbo 2.5-liter engine and all-wheel drive.
As for the rest of the range, the Santa Fe will be the first Hyundai SUV to get a hybrid powertrain. A combination between a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four, a 13-kW starter-generator, and a 44-kW electric motor produces a total power output of 225 horsepower (168 kilowatts) and 195 pound-feet (264 Newton-meters) of torque.
Non-hybrid models are expected to reach dealers towards the end of the year, while the Korean-built hybrid 2021 Santa Fe will arrive within the first quarter of 2021. A plugin hybrid model is also coming, though a timeline hasn't been set as of this writing.

Detroit Lions to waive WR Marvin Hall, per NFL Network report

For a team that is not exactly teeming with wide receivers, this news comes as a bit of a surprise: The Detroit Lions are planning to waive receiver Marvin Hall, NFL Network reported Friday.
Hall has 17 catches for 290 yards and two touchdowns while making
five starts this season. He might be the Lions' fastest player, and the team is short on pass catchers for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.
Kenny Golladay will miss his fifth straight game with a hip injury, leaving Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, Jamal Agnew and Quintez Cephus as the Lions' only healthy receivers.
[ FOR SUBSCRIBERS: How top Lions' GM candidates have fared in QB evaluations ]
Interim Lions coach Darrell Bevell said this week he hoped to generate more big plays on offense over the final five weeks of the season, and Hall, who averaged 37.3 yards on seven catches in nine games last year, seemed like a natural to help.

His departure, however, likely means more playing time for Cephus, a fifth-round pick out of Wisconsin who has been targeted sparingly since Week 1.
The Lions also have four tight ends on their 53-man roster, including undrafted free agent Hunter Bryant, who could make his debut Sunday after being activated from injured reserve.
"We really liked what we saw out of him in training camp," Bevell said. "He's doing a nice job, but he's still in his rookie year, still learning a lot. So give him an opportunity to get out on the field, see what he can do, see what we have and just go from there."

How Rimac Tests Its C_Two Hypercar So It Won’t Brick Stoplights With Electromagnetic Radiation

All electric devices emit a certain level of electromagnetic radiation, and if they're not shielded effectively, the functionality of these can also be affected by strong electromagnetic fields generated by nearby sources. Both nuclear and non-nuclear weaponry is based around the principle that a sufficiently large electromagnetic pulse can wipe out every system in its effective radius, hitting the enemy with a complete electrical blackout. However, if even your mobile phone produces a sizable electromagnetic field, how about ultra-high performance electric cars packing thousands of cells, multiple motors, inverters and high-voltage converters?
As Borna Radman, Rimac's vehicle electrical multiplex technician explains, homologating the 1, See: Bluetooth obd2. 914-horsepower C_Two in terms of its electromagnetic output is a challenge. Not only is there a ton of measuring and logging how each of the car's complex electric systems react to being hit with electromagnetic waves at frequencies ranging from 20 Megahertz to 30 Gigahertz, they also have to be tested in every drive mode and with every function engaged at once. After all, who can tell what levels of electromagnetic radiation it'll need to endure on the road?
Ran at various speeds inside a room completely shielded from outside radiation, the C_Two's plethora of systems have to work flawlessly. This includes four independent permanent-magnet electric motors, two-speed gearboxes, seven liquid cooling systems, 7,000 lithium-manganese-nickel battery cells, active suspension, aero, infotainment and safety equipment featuring ultrasonic and Lidar sensors. All the while, the team also has to ensure it's not going to affect other devices. A quick power discharge or voltage switch can't be allowed to compromise traffic lights, even if we could live with a few broken speed cameras here and there.
As the world progresses towards widespread electric transportation, EMC testing and regulating electromagnetic radiation will become more and more important. At 4,300 pounds, the 2021 Rimac C_Two is a two-seater rolling around at a maximum voltage of 720V, packing eight cameras and a rear axle that alone is a 1,340-horsepower affair. With its 120-kWh quick-charge battery pack, you can bet it emits a decent level of electromagnetic radiation.
Got a tip about how Lotus does this with Evija, or something else?

Welcome To Rage Yard, Where Cars Become Destruction Therapy

It's no surprise, 2020 has been a year to forget. Forced to stay inside, there's only so much we can do to maintain our sanity; go out for a walk, reorganize your cupboard, or consume all that modern streaming services have to offer. But what if you had the chance to use a tank to level old cars, See: obd2. and guns to shoot whatever vehicle you please? Thanks to the Rage Yard, that dream can be a reality.
Known as destruction therapy, this is nothing new, but nobody has thought to offer it at quite this scale before. You've most likely heard of a rage room, but the decimation opportunities you can expect from the Rage Yard are unparalleled in comparison.
The venue sells the experience as a two-part therapy extravaganza. The first activity involves shooting at cars with shotguns. Regardless of what has you feeling some type of way, take aim at your car of choice and let it rip. Sure, that might sound incredibly satisfying, but the real party piece comes after the appetizer.
Part two involves one member of your destruction party feeling the grunt of a 56 tonne (123,459 pound) Chieftain battle tank – the same model as seen in Fast and Furious 6 – rolling over the automotive scrap of yesteryear. We'd wager you'd be hard-pressed to find a better way to rid yourself of pent up 2020 frustrations – until they grant you access to properly fire up the tank-gun.
Unfortunately, this experience is only located in the United Kingdom, but there is a U.S. alternative known as Drive A Tank. For the uninitiated, you'll first receive instruction on how to safely operate a tank, along with add-on packages granting you access to driving through a house, driving over a car, or even driving over two cars.
Regardless of which experience takes your fancy, there has never been a better moment in time for some alternative self-care.

Michigan State basketball erases early jitters to knock off Duke 75-69

It might not have been how he imagined it, but Tom Izzo finally got his win at Duke.
Then again, it was every bit as pretty as Michigan State basketball's coach dreamed with how his team did it.
There weren't any fans at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and the 12th-ranked Spartans shook off a slow start to put a defensive stranglehold on the eighth-ranked Blue Devils in a 75-69 victory Tuesday night in Durham, North Carolina.
[ Michigan State just beat Duke without scratching the surface of its potential ]
Rocket Watts scored 20 points in his first start of the season, and Joey Hauser and Malik Hall each had double-doubles as Izzo improved to 3-12 all-time against Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.
MSU's length and athletic ability on defense bothered Duke, particularly on the perimeter. The Spartans (3-0) forced 12 turnovers with six steals, and they won the battle on the boards, 46-40.
The Blue Devils (1-1) were 5 of 23 from 3-point range, and made 20 of 62 attempts overall to finish shooting 32.3%.
Henry played a versatile defensive game with five rebounds, three steals and all three of MSU's blocks. He scored 14 points with five assists to offset his 7 of 21 shooting.
[ Celebrate 25 years of 'Mr. March': Order our updated Tom Izzo book today! ]
A link has been posted to your Facebook feed.
The Spartans opened the game sluggish and sloppy, missing shots and turning the ball over early. Duke raced to a 13-3 lead, though seven of those points came at the free-throw line. MSU had three turnovers and five fouls in the first 4:20.
But the Spartans slowly started scoring, particularly after Hall took a nasty fall after being pushed in the back by Duke's Joey Baker, who was called for a flagrant foul.
Trailing 25-18, MSU went on a 19-6 run to take the lead for good late in the first half. Watts hit a pair of jumpers to start it, with Foster Loyer's 3-pointer tying the game at 29.
Henry had 10 of his points in the first half and the Spartans took a 37-33 lead into the locker room.
Coming out after the break, the Spartans took over with a 17-5 burst, and built as big as a 16-point cushion.
[ Michigan State basketball legends, fans celebrate win over Duke ]
Michigan State sports headlines from Freep.com, delivered every day at 5:30 a.m.
