Detroit Youth Choir releases song about Georgia Senate runoff

The Detroit Youth Choir is starting off 2021 by releasing a song about Tuesday's U.S. Senate runoff election in Georgia.
The Motor City youth group that is famous for its inspiring second-place finish on NBC's "America's Got Talent" released "Georgia's Changing" on Friday, an adapted version of the ballad "I Am Changing" from the Broadway hit "Dreamgirls."
The DYC adaptation addresses Georgia's switch from GOP red to Democratic blue in November's presidential election and weighs in on the contest to determine who'll represent the state in the Senate, possibly shifting the balance of power.
Incumbent U.S. senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler are facing Democratic opponents Jon Ossoff and
the Rev. Raphael Warnock in the runoff.
The video ends with messages to vote for Ossoff and Warnock.
Stacey Abrams, a leading figure in the fight against voter suppression aimed at people of color and young people, retweeted the song Friday and thanked the DYC for the song.
"What a way to start the new year! Thank you @DycOfficial for the soundtrack for the change that's happening in Georgia," wrote Abrams, You may also like: Autel MaxiDiag MD806. who launched the Democratic advocacy group Fair Fight after narrowly losing her run for governor of the state in 2018.
What a way to start the new year! Thank you @DycOfficial for the soundtrack for the change that's happening in Georgia. @ReverendWarnock & @ossoff will get it done with the power of Georgia voters! #VoteJan5https://t.co/HQFADHaVNr
DYC came in second in 2019 on "America's Got Talent" and won fans across the globe. It is made up of metro Detroit students ranging from 8 to 18.
In July, the choir spoke out for racial justice with a new version of "Glory," the Oscar-winning song from the movie "Selma." It won praise from John Legend, who co-wrote "Glory," and actor David Oyelowo, who played Martin Luther King Jr. in the acclaimed film.
The DYC's version of "Glory" was adopted by President-elect Joe Biden's campaign.

The new "Georgia's Changing" features only two young artists, a choice made to help ensure the safety of the large choir during the COVID-19 surge.
Lead soloist Victoria Hunter, 17, is currently a member of the choir. IndioYaj (aka Jayla Smalls) ,a former DYC member, performs a rap that she wrote.
The version's rap lyrics mention Abrams and encourage people to support "a true democracy. "Take a stand, hold my hand/The world's changing and the nation, yeah and so is the plan," they state.
The song's arrangement was done by Detroit Youth Choir's music director Donnell Mosley. The recording received pro bono support from Alistair Wilson, managing director of Imagination Detroit (a branch of the global experience agency that works with Ford Motor Co.), Gerard Smerek, executive music producer at the Yessian music company, and several others donating their time.
The video was shot inside Royal Oak's Stagecrafters Baldwin Theatre and next to the Malice Green mural in Highland Park that was created last year by Detroit artist Sydney G. James.
On Monday, DYC posted the song on Twitter with this message: "John Lewis said: 'What I try to tell young people is that if you come together with a mission, and it's grounded with love and a sense of community, you can make the impossible possible.'"

Gov't clarifies stance on use of TraceTogether data for police probes

The government has acknowledged its mistake in not disclosing that the data from TraceTogether is not exempt from the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), following a revelation made in Parliament on 5 January that the police could access TraceTogether data during a criminal investigation under the CPC.
According to minister-in-charge of the Smart Nation Initiative Vivian Balakrishnan and Minister for Home Affairs and for Law K. Shanmugam, "the use of TraceTogether data in criminal investigations would be restricted to serious offences."
To formalise these assurances, the government will pass a piece of legislation specifying that personal data gathered through digital contact tracing methods, which include the TraceTogether and SafeEntry programmes, could only be used for contract tracing, except when there is a "clear and pressing need" to utilise the data for criminal investigation of serious offences.
"It is not in the public interest to completely deny the Police access to such data, when the safety of the public or the proper conduct of justice is at stake," a statement read. "If a serious criminal offence has been committed, the Police must be able to use this data to bring the perpetrators to justice, seek redress for the victims, and protect society at large."
The legislation will allow data collected for COVID-19 contact tracing to be used for police investigations, enquiries, or court proceedings for only the following categories: offences involving the use or possession of corrosive substances, offensive or dangerous weapons; terrorism-related offences under the Terrorism (Suppression of Bombings) Act, Terrorism (Suppression of Financing) Act, and Terrorism (Suppression of Misuse of Radioactive Material); crimes against persons where the victim is seriously hurt or killed; drug trafficking offences that attract the death penalty; escape from legal custody where there is reasonable belief that the subject will cause imminent harm to others; kidnapping; and serious sexual offences.

Troller T4 4X4 Is Dead After Ford Closes All Manufacturing In Brazil

Towards the end of 2020, Ford CEO Jim Farley spoke to investors about the company's financial future and a need to streamline operations on a global scale. That process sees the Blue Oval departing its manufacturing for vehicles and parts in Brazil, according to a new report from Automotive News.
That also means the off-road-loving Troller T4 will end its production run. Very Jeep-like and decidedly cool, the Troller T4 was manufactured by Brazil-based Troller Veículos Especiais. Ford bought the company in 2007 and continued production, eventually updating the T4 with modified underpinnings from the Ranger pickup. According to the report, Troller T4 production will continue through the fourth quarter of 2021, so it won't immediately disappear. Our colleagues Brazil confirmed the news with Ford.
While Troller production will run through most of the year. some operations are closing immediately. Two engine plants are among the immediate closures, You may also like: TPMS Programming Tool. though some additional parts manufacturing will continue for a few more months to keep supplies up. When that ends, the Troller facility will the only remaining Ford operation in Brazil and when that closes, Ford will have just two manufacturing facilities in all of South America. The automaker will still have a presence in the area, but the focus will be on importing global platforms as opposed to manufacturing locally.
The closures will reportedly cost Ford $4.1 billion, a majority of which is logged for 2020. Along with the Troller T4, the sales of the EcoSport and Ka will also cease in the region. Ford will maintain some offices and research centers in Brazil, including the company's headquarters in Sao Paulo. Manufacturing at the two remaining South American facilities – one in Argentina and one in Uruguay – is said to be unaffected.

Listen To Toyota Fire Up The Engine Of Its LeMans Hypercar

So it's 2021 now and the new seasons of motorsport are upon us. Regardless of when everything will start up again due to a resurgence of Covid, everyone is still gearing up for the green flag. As such, Toyota recently published a soundbite of the startup of its LeMans Hypercar.
The Japanese automaker doesn't reveal the engine layout, but as we've previously covered the Toyota GR Super Sport concept – a road-going version – that was teased in 2018 with a mid-mounted 2.4-liter twin-turbo V6, we can only guess that the race car will feature something similar. Power output will likely be at the top end of the 600 horsepower (447.4 kilowatts) mark as the new LeMans Hypercar rules limit competitors to 671 hp (500.3 kW).
Another stipulation in the rules is that 20 road-going versions of the racecar must be made. Not so long ago, this gave us fantastic automobiles like the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR and Porsche GT1 – and the GR Super Sport is no exception.
Semantics aside, the new regulations are aimed at leveling the playing field and cutting costs for smaller teams. Along with bringing more manufacturers to the premier endurance racing series, the alterations could mean the end of the big three – Porsche, Audi, and Toyota – dominating the podium at LeMans. Let's wait and see, AD: TPMS Sensor. but the Japanese automaker looks very confident with its efforts.
Regardless, Toyota has already tested its hypercar racer at Paul Ricard race circuit with great success. While it's unfortunate to see the end of the TS050 storybook, the future of endurance racing is looking incredibly exciting.

NUS scholarship student gets jail after breaking into girls’ dorm room to steal underwear

A National University of Singapore (NUS) student was sentenced to six weeks in prison on Monday (4 Jan) after he broke into a dormitory room to steal the female occupants' underwear, on multiple occasions.
The student is a 25-year-old who had won a scholarship to pursue higher education at NUS. According to the Chinese daily, he broke into a female dormitory room on five occasions across a three-week period last year. Between 14 Jan and 8 Feb, he stole six pieces of underwear belonging to the four occupants of the room.
The victims, who did not have a habit of locking their door, did not realise that their underwear had been stolen. One of the victims thought she had just placed the undergarments elsewhere – until she heard rumours that there was an "underwear thief" somewhere on campus.
The offender was caught after he broke into the unlocked room to steal more underwear on 8 Feb and bumped into one of the victims who was returning to her unit. The scholarship student ran away in fright and the victim quickly sought help from a security guard.
The police were called to investigate and identified the offender through surveillance footage. The student was subsequently arrested and the police seized some female underwear from his home.
He claimed thmitted the crime at a time when he was under great pressure from his last year in school and was also facing stress after a recent break-up.
The court also heard that the offender knew the layout of the dormitory since he had lived there before and added that it was close to his college.
The student's defense sought probation, pleading that the student's scholarship was suspended after the incident. Asserting that "every graduate will be under great pressure" and this cannot be an excuse to commit a crime, the prosecution noted that the student planned to commit a crime and tried not to leave traces when stealing, in order to avoid getting caught.
The 25-year-old was convicted of three charges of theft on Monday, with another charge of theft and five charges of trespassing under consideration. He was denied probation and was sentenced to six weeks in jail.
This is not the first time an NUS student has been caught stealing underwear. In November, a 20-year-old student admitted that he trespassed into dormitory premises to steal bags of laundry due to the urge to look at women's undergarments.

Bad space weather may make life impossible near Proxima Centauri

This article was originally published at The Conversation. The publication contributed the article to Space.com's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.
If you look up in the southern sky you can see the "pointer" stars, pointing towards the Southern Cross. One of these pointers is Alpha Centauri, which is actually a pair of Sun-like stars that are too close together to tell apart by eye.
There is a third member of the Alpha Centauri system as well: Proxima Centauri (Proxima Cen for short), which circles the central two stars in a wide orbit. This is the Sun's nearest neighbour, at a distance of just 4.2 light years.
It is possible one of Proxima Cen's planets is suitable for life. However, we recently detected the signature of fierce space weather from Proxima Cen, which implies an orbiting planet could be blasted with hazardous particles and magnetic fields.
Our sun is a relatively unremarkable yellow dwarf star, hosting the only known life-bearing planet in the Universe: our Earth.
Proxima Cen is very different. It is a red dwarf star, with a diameter only 15% of the sun's, and a surface temperature of 3,000 K (degrees Kelvin), much cooler than the sun's 6,000K.
Because Proxima Cen is relatively cool, the "Goldilocks zone" of orbits around it – where the temperature is just right for liquid water – is around one-twentieth the Earth's distance from the sun. We are interested in planets in a star's Goldilocks zone because liquid water is necessary for life as we know it.
Read more: Say hello to the Earth's nearest exoplanet neighbour: Proxima Centauri b
We know Proxima Cen has at least two planets: Proxima Cen b, a rocky "super-Earth" located in the middle of Proxima Cen's Goldilocks zone, and Proxima Cen c, a "sub-Neptune" located further out.
For years, astronomers have suspected planets like Proxima Cen b may be a dangerous home for life because they are so close to their host stars. Many red dwarf stars produce frequent, powerful flares – intense bursts of radiation travelling out into space. If planets like Proxima Cen b don't have protective features such as a thick atmosphere or a strong magnetic field, they would be exposed to perilous levels of radiation.
The "space weather" of red dwarfs is another important factor in determining how hospitable they are to life. While flares involve intense bursts of light, space weather events mean the magnetic field and charged particles from the star can interact with planets directly.
The most energetic space weather events are known as coronal mass ejections (or CMEs). These massive eruptions escape the atmosphere of a star and travel through space at millions of kilometres per hour.
If the space weather conditions are extreme enough, the planetary atmosphere can be blown away and its magnetic field can be pushed backwards, leaving the surface exposed to deadly flare radiation.
CMEs have been detected around the Sun since the 1970s, but detecting space weather events around distant stars is much harder.
CMEs on the Sun produce characteristic bursts of radio noise, such as "type II" and "type IV" bursts. By detecting similar signatures on other stars, we can indirectly identify stellar CMEs.
In early 2019, we pointed our telescopes at Proxima Cen for 11 nights. We used CSIRO's new radio telescope, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), as well as the Zadko Telescope, the ANU 2.3m Telescope, and NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).
Our goal was to detect the signature of a CME.
On the night of May 2, 2019, we observed a massive optical flare with an estimated total energy output of 16 septillion joules. (That's nearly 17 million years' worth of Australia's current electricity output.) On the Sun, flares this big happen only once every decade or two. But on Proxima Cen, they happen every few weeks.
Using ASKAP, we observed a spectacular sequence of intense radio bursts.
With the amazing detail revealed with ASKAP, we could see we had detected the best example of a solar-like type IV radio burst from another star to date.
This blast ...

Mediacorp drops DJ Sonia Chew from NYE show for attending birthday party

Major Singapore broadcaster Mediacorp has dropped radio DJ Sonia Chew from hosting its annual new year countdown show because she breached COVID-19 safety measures.
Chew, a 28-year-old host from 987FM radio, has been replaced by Class 95 DJ Jean Danker, 42, over her participation in a large October party.
"We take this matter seriously, and constantly brief and remind our artistes to adhere to safe management guidelines at all times. We will also cooperate fully with the authorities on their investigations," the company said in today's statement.
This year's annual countdown show and virtual concert will also still be hosted by Chew's original cohost, Joakim Gomez of 987FM
"In the meantime, Jean Danker will be hosting Let's Celebrate 2021 with Joakim Gomez," it added. Mediacorp owns both stations.
The show goes live on TV and online at 10:30 pm on Thursday. Other local stars performing on the show include singer Gareth Fernandez. The company also noted that the filming of the show would adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines on TV broadcasting that had been set out by authorities, which allowed no more than 20 onscreen talents to be unmasked during production.
Chew in October joined a handful of celebrities at a birthday party for actor Shane Pow. At least 13 people, including actors Terence Cao and Jeffrey Xu, were photographed without wearing face masks and social distancing. The Ministry of National Development said last week it was investigating.
Chew took to her Instagram account yesterday to apologize for her actions, saying that she was originally unaware that there was going to be a small party.
"Firstly, I want to sincerely apologise for my actions. Upon seeing that there were more than five people present, I should have removed myself from that situation, and I didn't. I'm fully responsible for that. This is by no means a way to make excuses for what happened," she wrote.
"I was invited to have drinks with what I understood to be a small group of people and was not aware it was a birthday celebration," she added.
Singaporeans are allowed to gather in groups of eight instead of five starting today as the country further relaxed COVID-19 measures. It has reported 58,524 cases and 29 deaths since the outbreak began in January.

It was one of the good-news stories of 2018: Sherry Pollex, entrepreneur and longtime partner of 2017 NASCAR Cup Champion Martin Truex, Jr., had finally finished her months-long course of chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. But, she cautioned in an interview with Southern Living, "My cancer tends to be very smart, so it learns to mutate itself against the drug. So, You may also like: Launch diagnostic code reader. we're hoping it doesn't do that this time."
Just before Christmas, it did. It was back. But Pollex is a fighter, going into surgery to remove three more tumors in mid-December. Thankfully it was a success, and Pollex tweeted that she was able to go home last Monday and spend the holidays recovering with her family.
A little about Sherry Pollex from her SherryStrong.org bio: "At 35, Sherry was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer and doctors estimated that her chance of survival was less than 30 percent within 5 years. She underwent a radical hysterectomy, debulking surgery and 17 months of chemotherapy." That's a horrific thing to endure. But in response, Pollex started SherryStrong.org to help women learn the early symptoms of ovarian cancer and explore "integrative and holistic practices" that can help improve cancer patients' quality of life alongside traditional treatments. Pollex is 41 now.
She and Truex, who currently drives the number 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, have spent countless hours working for the cause, donating heavily to cancer charities and promoting awareness with public campaigns. In November, Pollex opened the multimillion-dollar SherryStrong Integrative Medicine Oncology Clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina's Novant Health hospital to provide cancer patients with palliative care via things like acupuncture, oncology massage, yoga, acupuncture and dietary consulting.
"My hope is that when other patients come in, there is this healing energy and peacefulness that comes over them. This isn't a hospital," she said at the time. "This is a place to come to get well and feel well. This is a place of hope."
On December 18, Pollex tweeted that she would be returning to the hospital for more surgery after the cancer returned. "Here I am going to battle again. Praying my doctors can remove all of the disease so I can start chemo again soon & be out there fighting for all of you soon."
Three days later, the good news came: "Thank you for the outpouring of support. My surgery was successful, they were able to remove the three visible tumors. I am SO grateful for my amazing doctors, nurses and of course my family and friends." The post drew tens of thousands of likes across social media.
"So happy to be recovering at home now! Thank you to everyone that has sent texts, dropped off meals, sent flowers, prayed for us. I am in awe of this community. I have a long road ahead of me, but I'm ready."
She's a warrior, and has the entire NASCAR community behind her. It may be a long road, but she won't be traveling it alone.
